"You can't see what I can see" - Heavy D
Life is a beautiful gift, both fragile and precious, thus its possession demands extreme attention to detail as well as a humble thankfulness that transcends so called race, creed, gender and social status.
Dwight Myers aka Heavy D was a provocatively rare individual, insightful articulate, debonair and surprisingly graceful for a man his size. The Overweight Lover consistently defied odds, critics and conventional thought throughout his four decade long peaceful journey.
A triple threat, Mr. Big Stuff always appeared to be living large no matter the medium - music, television or movie screen.
Back in the late eighties Andre Harrell, placed all bets on Water Bed Hev and his crew from "Money Earnin' Mt. Vernon" - when he parted ways with Russell Simmons and Def Jam to start his own imprint Uptown Records.
History tells us that wager paid off Big Tyme as Heavy become a celebrated pioneer for exploring, mostly, uncharted territory with a sound, style and charm that purposely bridged the gap from the inner city to the out skirts.
With a vibe that was both warm and inviting, he gave and received respect from all. Rubbing elbows with musical royalty such as the King of Pop while being credited for giving a wide eyed, eager intern, Sean Combs, his first professional opportunity.
Thus making him the father of a legendary progeny of slick talking fly dressing big men M.C.'s as, hip hop greats learned to successfully mimic his seamless balancing act of creativity and commerce i.e. Notorious BIG, Fat Joe, Big Pun, Rick Ross.
Business savvy as well the creator of blue funk became president of Uptown Records long before Jigga Man decided to sit behind a desk.
I can vividly remember watching Heavy's videos as youth, growing up the two that left a stain in my brain the most are 1. The Overweight Lover's in the House - because of that James Brown loop, the same joint Eric B & Rakim used for I Aint No Joke. 2. We Got Our Own Thang - which to me was a visual masterpiece.
In both vids the boi gets busy moving ever so agile while he G mack'n NOT mean mugg'n the camera with those ever present gazel shades. A sharp contrast to many of todays major artist who find it difficult to walk and rhyme at the same time, let alone dance.
With a recent triumphant appearance on a BET awards show, Hev reemerged to rock to the delight of fans worldwide, he was once again poised to step back into the limelight some 100 plus pounds lighter.
But it was not meant to be as fate would intervene. Hev, who was showing no signs of illness, suddenly passed away on November 11, 2011, leaving the world wondering WHY? His cause of death has yet to be announced, however, for millions of people around the globe, Heavy D has permanently tagged his name on the wall of time with a original signature, all his own.
Nothin But LOVE....
